You're interest is solely in trying to run old Windows software (games etc.) not compatible with WindowsXP/Windows 7 and later, then you might have more success with a Linux Virtual Machine with 'Wine' - installed, which would overcome some of the limitations mpack has mentioned you would experience with a Win'98 Virtual Machine, although you might still have problems with more demanding software/games that were programmed to directly access specific computer hardware features.
